The IGAD Livestock Policy Initiative (LPI) is now in the process of replicating its Regional Training on “Livestock, Livelihoods and Institutions in the IGAD Region” in all member states. In doing so it is equipping participants to identify the specific livelihoods strategies of poorer livestock keepers, to understand the complex ‘rules of the game’ which determine how successful those strategies will be, and to craft supportive policies.
The training is being given to national policy fora drawn from different ministries, research institutes, international organizations, civil society and local NGOs. So far, the training has been given to the country teams of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and the Sudan; and will continue to be conducted for the country teams of Kenya, Somalia and Uganda. A complementary training on Gender and Livestock is being rolled out in parallel for the same participants.
